Music in our Worship Services
Music plays a prominent role in our worship services: in preservice selections that set the tone and theme for worship; in our hymns and responses; in underscoring for our rituals; and  in occasional special selections by the choir or guest musicians that reinforce the message of the day. Because UUs find the holy all around us, our music is not always expressed in God language.  Our music calls us to love one another, to be gentle with ourselves, to build beloved community, to revere our interconnectedness with the natural world around us, to expand our understanding of truth and meaning throughout our lives, and to support justice for the wide range of people, creatures, and our earth home. Our hymns draw from the wisdom and culture of many religious traditions as well as secular music that holds truth and meaning.  Unitarian Universalist worship services  present a variety of music, from light classical, to folk, music theater and popular music representative of today’s published music in addition to traditional familiar hymns with inclusive language texts.
Opportunities for participation in our Music Program
  • Vocalists lead weekly hymn selections on a rotating basis, especially important for our virtual worship participants
  • Participation in our UUCV choir
  • Special music contributed by instrumental or vocal soloists or small ensembles from the congregation with music selections  based  on the weekly message
  •  Special non-member guest musicians are also welcomed throughout the year
  •  Occasionally, music benefits are performed for a designated charity.
Choir
All are welcome to rehearse and perform with our choir regardless of experience. Choir opportunities occur about four times per year, approximately once per quarter. Rehearsals are held shortly after our 10:30 am church service is completed.  Choir participation involves about three post-service rehearsals prior to the Sunday service we perform, along with a short preservice rehearsal on the morning that the choir will be singing.  Our selections are usually 4-part harmony anthems. Anyone interested in singing with the choir should contact our Music Director, Carole Knisely in person or at music@uucv.net.
