May UUCV Book Group

May 21, 2017 , 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at 6:30 PM in our Yuuth Room to discuss Sherry Turkle’s book,  Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age.  Turkle, a sociologist and licensed clinical psychologist, observes that “when we turn to our devices instead of to one another, the cost is high: a loss of empathy.”  The picture is not encouraging. Those of us of a certain age remember what it was like when we met face to face and talked to each other.  Consider what has happened since smart phones, Facebook, texting, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat have taken over the airwaves.  Although we can’t stop the developing technology, we do need a reasonable and practical response that can keep us grounded in our core beliefs.  Turkle believes that the time is right to “reclaim conversation.” This will be a lively and fun discussion for everyone.  Questions: contact [email protected].
