Adult RE

Other Adult Religious Education opportunities coming up this year:
Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Non-Binary People and their Families (Nov 22 – Dec 20, 2026)
Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Non-Binary People and their Families invites people of all genders and orientations to explore concepts of gender, transgender history, identity formation, telling our stories, communal identities and more. The sessions are grounded in the Unitarian Universalist principle of justice, equity, and compassion in all relations and the belief that authenticity and acceptance of self are critical to human thriving.
Most news stories about transgender and non-binary people center the views of people who are cisgender—that is, who are not trans or non-binary—and who have no close relationships with transgender or non-binary people. This Adult Lifespan Faith Development program centers transgender and non-binary stories while offering an opportunity for self-reflection, growth and understanding.
The 4 sessions use a covenant group model of deep sharing and deep listening. Our primary resource is Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Non-Binary People and their Families, from Editor Peggy Gillespie. The book can be purchased at In Spirit, the UUA bookstore. If the cost of purchasing the book is prohibitive, please reach out directly to Rev. Phoenix (minister@uucv.org) who will make arrangements for a copy. You are encouraged to read at least the first 5 stories before classes begin.
Advent Study: The Advent Tree (Nov 22 – Dec 20, 2026)
Jesus was born in an obscure town, but his family tree told a much greater story rooted in the history of the Hebrew Bible. This Advent, we will move beyond the traditional narrative using Kara Eidson’s book, The Advent Tree: Meeting Jesus in God’s Big Story. Discover how this legacy shaped the Savior he became, and find your own meaningful place within the big story of God and God’s people.

Lenten Study: Hard and Holy Work (Feb 10 – March 21, 2027
Where do we see burning bushes in our world today, and what are they calling us to do? This Lent, we embark on a journey of self-reflection and action using Mary Alice Birdwhistell and Tyler Mayfield’s book, Hard and Holy Work: A Lenten Journey through the Book of Exodus. Together, we will challenge ourselves to view the marginalized through God’s eyes, reflect on how privilege and uncertainty impact our spiritual sight, and cultivate endurance for justice work.
