SUMMARY:Adult Ed - The Wi$dom Path: Money\, Spirit & Life
DESCRIPTION:Third Tuesdays – The Wi$dom Path: Money\, Spirit & Life \nThe Meaning of Money In our Lives \nBeginning in childhood and throughout our adult lives\, we receive many messages about money from family members\, friends\, co-workers\, popular culture\, and our faith community. These messages are often conflicting. How money is managed and spent can be a source of confusion and conflict in our close relationships. Understanding one’s personal story and the values that are at the root of one’s relationship with money is an important step in creating a spiritually healthy relationship with money. For this reason\, the central stories in this workshop will be participants’ money autobiographies. \nIn this workshop\, participants will also be introduced to the idea that there are generational differences in how we understand money and finances\, dynamics that might come into play in our personal\, familial\, and congregational interactions around money. After reflecting on their own stories and on the broader context for those stories\, participants will have an opportunity to reflect on how their money habits align with their personal values and the shared values of their Unitarian Universalist faith.

SUMMARY:Adult Ed - Hindsight\, Humor & Hope: Who\, Me\, An elder?
DESCRIPTION:Second Tuesdays – Hindsight\, Humor & Hope: Who\, Me\, An elder? \nThis workshop encourages us not to stay distant from painful memories and/or grudges but rather to begin to see them with fresh eyes and learn from them. Confronting difficult memories in the present with the wisdom and insight of the present helps individuals become spiritually stronger. Instead of dwelling in the past\, we can use the past as a text of lived experience and learn from it. In so doing\, we meaningfully weave the fabric of our lifetime. \nThis workshop offers a variety of practices and activities that support the spiritual work to be done\, including stretching exercises\, guided meditation\, small group discussion\, and creating a visual life map or landscape. \n*Note  This workshop requires some work to be done ahead of time at home.  If you would like to attend this workshop but have not attended previous workshops please contact Rev. Aija to get the necessary materials.

SUMMARY:"Dream On" Documentary Screening and Dessert
DESCRIPTION:SEE IT HERE BEFORE IT’S SHOWN ON PBS… \nA screening of the soon-to-be shown documentary DREAM ON will be held at UUCV on Wednesday\, September 28th at 6:30 pm. \nThe documentary DREAM ON investigates the perilous state of the American Dream after decades of rising income inequality and declining economic mobility. In an epic road trip\, political comedian John Fugelsang retraces the nearly two-hundred-year-old journey of Alexis de Tocqueville. Along the way he explores whether the optimistic spirit of the American Dream that Tocqueville popularized is alive and well in the twenty-first century or whether George Carlin was right when he famously quipped “It’s called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.”

SUMMARY:Adult Ed - Spirit of Life
DESCRIPTION:  \nFourth Tuesdays – Spirit of Life \nSpirit of Life workshops offer participants space\, time\, and community to explore their Unitarian Universalist spirituality. Each focuses on a different aspect of the spiritual life\, framed by the lyrics of Carolyn McDade’s song “Spirit of Life.” Like the song\, the workshops are designed to be welcoming to Unitarian Universalists of many spiritual and theological persuasions. Participants are invited to claim an inclusive definition of spirituality and recognize the spiritual aspects of their lives. Reflecting\, speaking\, and listening are core activities in each workshop. \nThis introductory workshop gets participants in touch with spiritual moments in their lives. Rather than offering opportunities to discuss or debate the existence of something external called “spirit\,” the activities help participants recognize and claim their own internal experiences of wonder\, awe\, and connection.

SUMMARY:Adult Ed - The Wi$dom Path: Money\, Spirit & Life
DESCRIPTION:Third Tuesdays – The Wi$dom Path: Money\, Spirit & Life \nThe Wi$dom Path: Money\, Spirit\, and Life is a program that gos far beyond “Financial Literacy 101” to include such topics as personal and cultural money stories\, economic justice\, classism\, and the impact of our financial decision making on our ability to live lives of meaning and purpose. Their hope was that such a program would free congregations\, families\, and individuals to speak openly about a subject that is often fraught with unstated presumptions and unacknowledged tensions and would allow the creation of spiritually healthy approaches to money\, generosity\, economic justice\, investment\, and stewardship. \nWhy is it important to talk about money? We will think about the meaning of money and the ways one’s personal money issues can be a factor in living a fulfilling life. We consider the variety and complexity of individual and social dimensions of our relationships with money. Join Rev. Aija as we begin to develop a productive way of being together to explore money issues.

DESCRIPTION:Love outlasts even the worst of our realities.  Love never ends. \n\n\n\nSYNERGY Home Care presents “His Neighbor Phil” is the story of Harvey\, a man whose wife (Mary) has early onset Alzheimer’s disease. The film shows the effects of the disease not only on Mary but also the entire family and their  community. While the film deals honestly with the realities of the disease\, it focuses most of its attention on the tireless work of the caregivers. \nThe film stars nationally-known actors Stephanie Zimbalist (Remington Steele)\, Daniel Roebuck (The Fugitive\, Lost\, Glee)\, Ellen Dolan (As the World Turns)\, Oscar nominee Sally Kellerman \n(M*A*S*H) and Nashville recording artist Ashlee Hewitt (Elle: A Modern Cinderella Story) \n“We wanted the film to be a true telling of what families go through when Alzheimer’s or other dementia symptoms become a part of their life\,” writer/director Scott Thompson said. “But even more \nthan that\, we wanted to show the truth that love outlasts even the worst realities of life\, including Alzheimer’s disease and that it is love which sustains them when everything else seems to be gone.” \nThis film is free and will be shown at the Carlisle Theater on Wednesday\, September 14 at 7:00 PM.

SUMMARY:Who are the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence?
DESCRIPTION:According to their website\, “The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence® is a leading-edge Order of queer nuns. Since our first appearance in San Francisco on Easter Sunday\, 1979\, the Sisters have devoted ourselves to community service\, ministry and outreach to those on the edges\, and to promoting human rights\, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment. We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty and we use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry\, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.” \nJoin us in the Board room at 9 am on Sunday September 11th when Travis Ferrell will tell us more. \nThis is a joint offering from UUCV’s Adult RE and Social Justice Committees.

SUMMARY:Book Groups May Pick
DESCRIPTION:Join us  in our Yuuth Room Sunday\, May 22 at 6:30 pm to discuss James McBride’s book\, The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother.  As a young boy\, one of 12 brothers and sisters\, growing up in Brooklyn’s Red Hook projects in the 1960’s\, James asked his mother if he was black or white. She answered\, “You’re a human being\, educate yourself or you’ll be a nobody!”  In this very moving and well written narrative James tells his mother’s story and his own with honesty and humor.  It is an extraordinary story how a rabbi’s daughter\, born in Poland and raised in the South\, moved to Harlem\, married a black man and put all 12 of her children through college. Brian McPherson will lead the discussion.  Questions: Contact Richard Bronakoski at richardbronakoski@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:TRAPPED: What remains of a woman's right to choose?
DESCRIPTION:Join us on  Wednesday\, May 4th at 6:30 PM to view the documentary “TRAPPED”.\n\nThis film traces the abortion rights saga from Wendy Davis’s bold filibuster against Texas’s awful abortion restriction law to today–when access to safe abortion for hundreds of thousands of women rests on the Supreme Court’s shoulders\, all through the eyes of the brave individuals to run and work at abortion clinics. Come learn how and why clinics are shutting down\, because if we don’t fight back\, there may be no clinics left.

SUMMARY:UUCV Book Group
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our Yuuth Room to discuss Orphan 8 by Kim van Alkemade.  “A stunning debut novel of historical fiction set in the forgotten world of New York City’s Jewish orphanages.”  It is a story of a young woman\, Rachel\, who becomes a nurse and then meets the doctor who performed dangerous medical experiments on her as a child in a Jewish orphanage.  In 1919 medical experimentation on children in orphanages was a common practice. Through the compelling narrative story of her life we come to know Rachel and the choice she must make:  forgiveness or revenge. Kim will be with us for the discussion.  Question: Contact Richard Bronakoski at richardbronakoski@gmail.com
