DESCRIPTION:Join us  in our Yuuth Room Sunday\, May 22 at 6:30 pm to discuss James McBride’s book\, The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother.  As a young boy\, one of 12 brothers and sisters\, growing up in Brooklyn’s Red Hook projects in the 1960’s\, James asked his mother if he was black or white. She answered\, “You’re a human being\, educate yourself or you’ll be a nobody!”  In this very moving and well written narrative James tells his mother’s story and his own with honesty and humor.  It is an extraordinary story how a rabbi’s daughter\, born in Poland and raised in the South\, moved to Harlem\, married a black man and put all 12 of her children through college. Through the compelling narrative story of her life we come to know Rachel and the choice she must make:  forgiveness or revenge. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, March 20\, 2016 at 6:30 PM in our Yuuth Room to discuss Marcus Borg’s book\, Reading the Bible for the First Time Again: Taking the Bible Seriously But Not Literally. Note the word “again” in the title.  Borg wants us to read the bible again\, not as a literal-factual text\, but as a source of meaning and guidance.  Borg argues that it is not necessary to give up our scientific and critical ways of thinking when we read the bible.  Using current biblical scholarship and exceptionally lucid writing\, he reintroduces stories and biblical texts that we thought we knew and shows that the wisdom offered is still relevant today.  Dot Everhart will lead the discussion.  Questions: Contact Richard Bronakoski at richbro@ix.netcom.com.
